WildBlue Upgrades Its Satellite Internet Network

From MarketWatch.com today....WildBlue Communications, Inc., the leading provider of broadband satellite service throughout rural America, today announced the completion of a series of hardware and software system upgrades that have increased its total network capacity by more than 150,000 additional customers since the beginning of 2008. The upgrades bring WildBlue's total network capacity to over 640,000 customers, with capacity available throughout the entire country.

"When you're the fastest growing broadband satellite provider, you have to continue to provide room to grow," said David Leonard, WildBlue's Chief Executive Officer. "Our total system capacity to date is now 31 percent above where we started the year which is great news for our retailers and wholesalers who are working hard to bring on new customers."

The most recent upgrade involves the addition of enhanced transmission link hardware and software technologies that enable transmission of 50 percent more information bits through the same existing radio link. As a result, an increase of nearly 50 percent in capacity is realized in beams that were previously upstream (return path) constrained.
And, according to Thad Mazurczyk, WildBlue's Vice President of Engineering, there are more upgrades on the horizon. "Additional upgrades are planned across our network throughout the rest of the year and are expected to result additional capacity, with some beams in our high demand areas enjoying capacity increases of as much as 65 percent since the beginning of the year."
WildBlue estimates that there are over 11 million households in areas throughout the United States where DSL or cable broadband services are not available and that over 7.5 million of these households are still accessing the Internet through a traditional dial-up connection.

WildBlue Gets Call Center Help

This week, WildBlue announced partnerships with two U.S.-based call center providers to support its customer service efforts. The relationships are with Sitel, a global business process outsourcing provider, and Cloud 10, a call center outsourcing provider utilizing a network of home-based care agents. Earlier in the week, WildBlue said Peak8 Solutions, a provider of customer service and support solutions for connected “smart” homes and digital lifestyle end-users, will offer its "Support Services Live" solution to the company.

WILDBLUE RECEIVES SSPI 2008 INDUSTRY INNOVATOR AWARD

WildBlue Communications, Inc., the leading provider of satellite broadband service in North America, was recognized with the 2008 Industry Innovator award for Service Development and Applications by the Society of Satellite Professionals (SSPI). The award was presented to WildBlue’s CEO, David Leonard during a special ceremony at the Satellite 2008 convention held annually in Washington, DC.

WildBlue received the Industry Innovator award for the successful introduction of its two-way broadband Internet service to homes and businesses across the United States via Ka-band satellite. In the process, WildBlue developed new satellite technology, featuring extensive reuse of frequencies in narrow spot beams, and led the commercial introduction of the Ka frequency band. This substantially lowered the cost of serving each subscriber, and made an affordable service possible.

"I am very proud to accept this prestigious award on behalf of all the employees at WildBlue," said Leonard. "Our incredible growth over the past year, combined with our high customer satisfaction ratings, affirms our commitment to being the best high-speed Internet provider for rural America."

The SSPI is a nonprofit, member-benefit society that serves satellite professionals throughout their working lives. The Industry Innovators Awards, introduced in 1993, recognize new and different designs, applications, activities and contributions to the satellite industry from the private and public sectors. Honorees are selected by a committee of industry experts for accomplishments that range across a broad spectrum of advanced satellite technology and business applications.
