Satellite Internet Nationwide

Frequently Asked Questions

WildBlue is a high-speed Internet service perfect for homes and small offices. WildBlue uses wireless satellite technology to send and receive data between your computer and the internet. So WildBlue can reach rural areas where cable and DSL cannot. All you need is a view to the southern sky and a PC. WildBlue takes care of the rest. WildBlue Satellite Internet is used by more than 400,000 Americans just like you.

Standard installation is free!  A professional installer will come to your home and run up to 100 feet of RG-6 cable from the antenna to the modem.  The installer will route the cable through one exterior wall and one interior wall or floor.  The installer will connect the WildBlue modem to one computer.  Please note:  Multiple PCs and wireless routers are not part of the free standard installation. If custom charges are necessary in order to complete the installation, the installer will inform you prior to the start of work.  In the event a pole mount is required, your installer will charge up to $150.00 at the time of installation.
Yes.  WildBlue recommends the use of SSL-based VPNs.  SSL-based VPNs work well on the WildBlue network because they work efficiently over a satellite connection.  Users of IP Sec-based VPNs will find their VPN will work over the WildBlue network, but it may be slower due to the affects of latency.
Satellite transmissions have an issue called "latency", which greatly affects online real-time game play.  The end result is that you will have to wait longer than your opponent for data to get back to you via the WildBlue satellite.  Games negatively affected are CounterStrike, Quake, and Halo style games.  Games such as WarCraft, StarCraft and Diablo will work fine as long as you are playing one-on-one.  Online casino and card games should be fine as well.

Windows/PC:  Windows 2000, XP or Vista

Mac:  OS 10.4 or higher

WildBlue offers a 2-way broadband connection, so no phone lines are necessary.

Your WildBlue equipment will be leased to you as long as you remain a WildBlue customer.  WildBlue has a one-time set-up fee of $99.95.  Customers will pay a montly lease fee of $5.95.  For the entire period of the equipment lease, the hardware will be covered under WildBlue's equipment replacement warranty.  WildBlue customers also have the added benefit of pre-paying the 24 month lease fee for just $99.95 up front.  Standard professional installation is free.

You will also be billed a monthly service fee which will vary depending on the package you choose.

WildBlue regulates its network through a Fair Access Policy.  The Fair Access Policy prevents the heavy usage of a few customers from negatively affecting the normal usage of all other customers.  For the few customers whose usage goes beyond the Fair Access Policy's threshold, the system will restrict their speed until their usage comes back into a normal range.

Yes WildBlue is compatible with most wireless home networking products. Setup of your home wireless network is not part of the WildBlue free standard installation. Your WildBlue installer may be willing to do this for a small fee. Talk to your installer about this when he calls to schedule your installation. We think the wireless router providers have done a great job making a wireless network easy for the home owner to setup. Plus, having done the setup, you'll be better able to trouble-shoot and add devices to your wireless network down the road. So, we recommend finding a great deal on a NetGear or Linksys wireless router on amazon.com or newegg.com and do the home wireless network setup on your own.  Buy the way, it's GREAT to relax on your front porch or deck with a laptop and surf the internet.
You should always check with your Home Owner's Association first.  However, the FCC considers the WildBlue dish to be part of the "Over the Air Reception Devices Rule" meaning it falls under the same category as other residential satellite dishes and therefore is legally permissable to be mounted to your dwelling.
Self-installation is not an option.  A professional WildBlue installer must mount the dish in the proper location to receive signal from the satellite and ensure all connections are properly made.
